The Bar (2017)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

In downtown Madrid, a series of mysterious gunshots trap a motley assortment of people in a decrepit bar.

The Quartile Take

Alex de la Iglesia's Madrid-set claustrophobic thriller keeps its ensemble trapped under siege in a bar, generating decent tension and dark comedy from the chaotic group dynamics. The plot has entertaining momentum in its first half but loses coherence as it descends into the sewers, with the ending feeling rushed and unsatisfying. The ensemble cast performs capably within their broadly drawn archetypes, though no single performance truly stands out. Cinematography is serviceable but unremarkable given the confined single-location premise — de la Iglesia doesn't exploit the space as inventively as he might. The film has some of his signature anarchic energy but feels like a lesser entry in his filmography, not quite as distinctively wild as his best work.
