Kin (2018)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

A young boy finds a powerful otherworldly weapon, which he uses to save his older adoptive brother from a crew of thugs. Before long, the two of them are also pursued by federal agents and mysterious mercenaries aiming to reclaim their asset.

The Quartile Take

Kin blends a coming-of-age road movie with sci-fi elements but never fully commits to either genre, resulting in an undercooked narrative that feels stretched from its short-film origins. The performances from James Franco and Dennis Quaid add some credibility, and the cinematography captures Detroit and the road trip with reasonable competence. However, the sci-fi weapon concept feels largely unexplored and the story is formulaic in its beats. The ending attempts a franchise-launching twist that feels unearned given the thin world-building preceding it, leaving the film feeling more like a pilot than a satisfying standalone story.
