Wonder Wheel (2017)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

The story of four characters whose lives intertwine amid the hustle and bustle of the Coney Island amusement park in the 1950s: Ginny, an emotionally volatile former actress now working as a waitress in a clam house; Humpty, Ginny’s rough-hewn carousel operator husband; Mickey, a handsome young lifeguard who dreams of becoming a playwright; and Carolina, Humpty’s long-estranged daughter, who is now hiding out from gangsters at her father’s apartment.

The Quartile Take

Wonder Wheel is visually stunning thanks to Vittorio Storaro's rich, expressionistic cinematography that bathes Coney Island in warm amber and neon hues, earning it genuine distinction. However, the plot feels stagey and melodramatic in a way that doesn't fully transcend its theatrical roots, recycling familiar Woody Allen themes of infidelity, disillusionment, and romantic rivalry without much freshness. The performances are uneven — Kate Winslet commits fully and delivers an intense turn, but the supporting cast, particularly Justin Timberlake's narrating lifeguard, feels mannered and hollow. The film leans heavily on Allen's established tropes and 1950s nostalgia without adding a distinctive voice, keeping Novelty low. The ending is bleak and somewhat abrupt, feeling more deflating than dramatically earned, leaving the audience with little resolution or resonance.
