The Lodgers (2017)

Quartile rating: 5.5/10 · 1 rating

1920, rural Ireland. Anglo-Irish twins Rachel and Edward share a strange existence in their crumbling family estate. Each night, the property becomes the domain of a sinister presence (The Lodgers) which enforces three rules upon the twins: they must be in bed by midnight; they may not permit an outsider past the threshold; and if one attempts to escape, the life of the other is placed in jeopardy. When troubled war veteran Sean returns to the nearby village, he is immediately drawn to the mysterious Rachel, who in turn begins to break the rules set out by The Lodgers. The consequences pull Rachel into a deadly confrontation with her brother - and with the curse that haunts them.

The Quartile Take

The Lodgers is a visually accomplished Irish gothic horror with strong atmosphere and striking cinematography that makes excellent use of its decaying estate setting. The premise—twins bound by supernatural rules in their crumbling ancestral home—has genuine intrigue, and the 1920s rural Ireland backdrop gives it a distinctive texture. However, the plot loses momentum in its second half, leaning on familiar gothic curse mechanics without fully delivering on its setup. The acting is competent but uneven, with the leads conveying atmosphere more than psychological depth. The ending feels rushed and unsatisfying, failing to capitalize on the dread the film carefully builds. Novelty is moderate: the setting and rules-based supernatural framework are interesting, but the underlying twin-curse narrative treads well-worn gothic ground.
