The Quartile Take

Our Souls at Night is elevated almost entirely by the chemistry and warmth of Jane Fonda and Robert Redford, reuniting on screen for the first time in decades. Their performances bring genuine depth and tenderness to what is otherwise a fairly conventional late-life romance narrative. The plot follows a predictable arc drawn from Kent Haruf's quiet novel, and while the small-town Colorado atmosphere is rendered with understated grace, the cinematography doesn't distinguish itself. The film's novelty is limited — the premise of two elderly neighbors finding companionship is familiar territory handled without significant formal invention. The ending, which mirrors the novel's bittersweet and somewhat abrupt conclusion, feels unsatisfying and deflating rather than emotionally earned, leaving the audience wanting resolution that never quite arrives.
