A mysterious global blackout yields countless populations to simply vanish, leaving only their clothes and possessions behind. A small handful of survivors band together in a dimly-lit tavern on 7th Street, struggling to combat the apocalyptic horror. Realizing they may in fact be the last people on earth, a dark shadow hones in on them alone.
Vanishing on 7th Street has an intriguing premise rooted in creeping darkness and the Roanoke mystery, and its visual atmosphere — using light sources as lifelines against encroaching shadow — gives it some genuine cinematographic tension. However, the plot fails to develop its intriguing setup into anything satisfying, leaving too many questions unanswered in a way that feels like negligence rather than artful ambiguity. The acting is serviceable but uneven, with characters that remain thinly sketched. The film earns modest novelty points for its singular mood and Detroit setting, but the execution is too muddled to feel truly distinctive. The ending is particularly frustrating, resolving nothing and leaving audiences cold rather than thoughtfully unsettled.
