In his squalid apartment, a man tries to squash with his shoe an insect of some kind that is moving around the room.

The Quartile Take

Nolan's three-minute short is a remarkably assured debut that punches well above its weight. Shot in stark black-and-white with claustrophobic framing, the cinematography is genuinely distinctive and foreshadows the visual grammar he'd refine in Following and Memento. The recursive, identity-collapsing concept is strikingly original for its micro-budget origins — a man hunting something that turns out to be a smaller version of himself, hunted in turn — delivering a philosophical gut-punch in under three minutes. Acting and plot are necessarily constrained by the short format, competent but not exceptional. The ending lands the conceptual twist efficiently, though the circular logic feels slightly abrupt rather than fully satisfying.
