A band of students comes to celebrate the New Year in an old manor house isolated from everything. But soon after their arrival, strange events disrupt the atmosphere, before the party turns squarely to the nightmare ...
The Mansion is a fairly generic French horror-comedy that hits familiar genre beats without much distinction. The premise—students partying in an isolated manor haunted by something sinister—is well-worn territory, and the film doesn't bring a particularly fresh voice or memorable craft to it. The comedy and horror tones struggle to cohere effectively, the plot is predictable, and the acting is serviceable but unremarkable. Cinematography is functional at best. The ending offers little surprise. Solidly mediocre across the board, consistent with its modest reputation.
