The Quartile Take

Cube Zero is a prequel that attempts to expand the mythology of the Cube franchise by showing the bureaucratic machinery behind the deadly maze, which is a mildly interesting angle. However, the execution is largely derivative of the originals, recycling the same trap sequences and claustrophobic corridors without adding meaningful depth. The acting is serviceable but unremarkable, with characters that feel thinly written. Cinematography maintains the franchise's grim, industrial aesthetic competently but without distinction. The ending attempts a twist but feels forced and unsatisfying, failing to deliver the existential punch of the original. Overall a below-average entry in a franchise that had already mined its best ideas.
