A-X-L (2018)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

The life of a teenage boy is forever altered by a chance encounter with cutting edge military technology.

The Quartile Take

A-X-L is a formulaic teen sci-fi adventure that blends E.T.-style boy-and-his-dog bonding with military robot action without distinguishing itself in any meaningful way. The plot hits predictable beats—lonely teen, secret bond with a machine, government pursuit—without subverting or elevating the formula. Acting is serviceable but unremarkable from its young leads. Cinematography is competent with some decent desert landscapes and robot FX work. Novelty is low as the concept recycles well-worn tropes from robot companion films. The ending resolves in a fairly unsatisfying, telegraphed manner that offers little emotional payoff.
