Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating
A shy teenager living on the Isle of Wight dreams of pop stardom. With the help of an unlikely mentor, she enters a singing competition that will test her integrity, talent, and ambition.
Teen Spirit follows a well-worn underdog music competition template with few surprises in its narrative arc. Elle Fanning delivers a committed central performance and the film has some stylish visual moments, but the plot hits familiar beats without subverting or elevating the genre. The ending resolves predictably and the overall conception feels derivative of similar rise-to-fame stories. Cinematography has flair in concert sequences but doesn't distinguish itself beyond genre competence.
