In 1991 Madrid, after holding a séance at school, a teen girl minding her younger siblings at home suspects an evil force has entered their apartment.
Veronica follows a fairly familiar supernatural horror template — Ouija board, demonic possession, haunted teenager — that doesn't stray far from genre conventions despite its 'based on true events' hook. The Spanish setting and period detail add modest color, and Sandra Escacena delivers a committed lead performance, but the supporting cast is unremarkable. Paco Plaza's direction is technically competent with decent atmosphere, though it rarely transcends the genre's visual grammar. The possession/Ouija premise has been done many times before, offering little in the way of fresh ideas. The ending is bleak but telegraphed, failing to land with the impact it aims for.
