Set in a small English town in 1959, a woman decides, against polite but ruthless local opposition, to open a bookshop, a decision which becomes a political minefield.
The Bookshop is a quietly affecting period drama with solid performances, particularly from Emily Mortimer and Patricia Clarkson, and competent English countryside cinematography. However, the plot is rather thin and meandering, relying heavily on the atmosphere of quiet conflict rather than dramatic tension. The ending is notably downbeat and somewhat unsatisfying, leaving little sense of resolution or catharsis. The film offers little that is distinctively novel — the story of an idealistic outsider crushed by small-town conservatism is well-worn territory, and the adaptation doesn't bring a particularly fresh or singular voice to the material.
