In 2030 the world is in a permanent state of economic recession and facing serious environmental problems as a result of global warming.
The Humanity Bureau is a low-budget dystopian thriller starring Nicolas Cage that fails to distinguish itself in any meaningful category. The plot retreads well-worn dystopian tropes—a bureaucratic system that eliminates 'unproductive' citizens—without adding fresh ideas or depth. Cage's performance is notably muted and uninspired, even by his own variable standards, and the supporting cast offers little to elevate the material. Cinematography is functional at best, with flat, generic visuals that do little to sell the bleak future setting. The film offers almost no novelty in a crowded dystopian genre, recycling familiar concepts without a distinctive voice or execution. The ending is predictable and unsatisfying, wrapping up without earned emotional resonance. Across all categories, the film lands squarely in below-average territory, consistent with its modest reputation.
