The Quartile Take

John Carpenter's return to directing after a long hiatus, The Ward is a competent but largely unremarkable psychological horror thriller. The plot leans heavily on a twist ending (dissociative identity disorder reveal) that feels borrowed from films like Identity and Shutter Island, making it feel derivative rather than fresh. The acting is serviceable, with Amber Heard and the ensemble of psychiatric patients turning in adequate performances without standout moments. Cinematography is polished and professional, showing Carpenter's technical competence, but lacks the distinctive visual flair of his classic work. The twist ending undermines much of what came before and feels telegraphed to genre-savvy viewers, landing as a disappointment rather than a revelation. Overall a middling entry that fails to recapture Carpenter's former glory.
