Harry Styles: Behind the Album (2017)

Quartile rating: 5.5/10 · 1 rating

Chronicles Harry’s musical journey while creating his much anticipated debut solo album. The film features exclusive interviews and behind the scenes footage shot in Jamaica, Los Angeles and London during the making of the album and is complemented by Harry and his band performing songs from it for the first time at the world famous Abbey Road Studios in London.

The Quartile Take

A standard music documentary following a pop star's debut album creation, 'Behind the Album' offers an intimate but fairly conventional look at Harry Styles' recording process. The cinematography captures the various locations (Jamaica, LA, London) with reasonable flair, and the Abbey Road performance segment provides a satisfying conclusion. However, the format is well-worn territory for artist documentaries, the 'plot' is thin and predictable (artist struggles, finds their voice, succeeds), and as a promotional piece it lacks the depth or critical distance that elevates great music documentaries. The high TMDB score reflects devoted fan enthusiasm rather than objective documentary craft.
