In Lincoln City, some inhabitants have extraordinary abilities. Most live below the poverty line, under the close surveillance of a heavily militarized police force. Connor, a construction worker with powers, involves with a criminal gang to help his ailing mother. (Based on the short film “Code 8,” 2016.)
Code 8 expands on its 2016 short film predecessor with a workmanlike dystopian sci-fi crime story. The plot blends familiar X-Men-style powered-underclass themes with a fairly generic crime drama about a desperate son turning to crime, offering little that feels fresh or surprising. Acting from Robbie and Stephen Amell is serviceable but unremarkable given the limited character depth. Cinematography is competent for its modest budget, achieving a grounded, gritty look without any standout visual flourishes. Novelty is low — the premise recycles well-trodden powered-minority allegory and drug-crime narratives without a distinctive voice. The ending resolves predictably with few surprises, wrapping up in a way that feels more like a franchise setup than a satisfying conclusion.
