Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating
Juliette, a lone survivor of an apocalyptic era, fights to survive against hunger, thirst, a broken leg and strange disturbing creatures that only come out at nighttime.
Hostile blends post-apocalyptic survival horror with a non-linear romantic backstory, giving it some emotional ambition beyond pure genre exercise. The dual-timeline structure adds modest depth to Juliette's character, and the creature design is competent if unspectacular. However, the narrative relies heavily on familiar post-apocalyptic tropes—lone survivor, nighttime creature threat, flashback romance—without meaningfully subverting them, keeping Novelty low. The ending feels somewhat predictable and emotionally underwhelming given the buildup. Acting is serviceable, with the lead carrying much of the film on her own, and cinematography captures the desolate landscapes adequately without distinctive visual flair. Overall a mid-tier genre effort that works better as a character drama than as horror.
