Erin Brockovich (2000)

Quartile rating: 7.5/10 · 1 rating

A twice-divorced mother of three who sees an injustice, takes on the bad guy and wins -- with a little help from her push-up bra. Erin goes to work for an attorney and comes across medical records describing illnesses clustered in one nearby town. She starts investigating and soon exposes a monumental cover-up.

The Quartile Take

Erin Brockovich rides almost entirely on Julia Roberts' Oscar-winning performance, which is genuinely exceptional — charismatic, grounded, and fully inhabited. The plot follows a fairly conventional underdog-vs-corporation arc that hits expected beats without much subversion, though it's executed with competence and heart. Soderbergh's direction is assured and stylish but not particularly distinctive for his career or the genre. The ending delivers satisfying emotional payoff consistent with the true story but offers little surprise. Novelty is moderate — the film perfects the legal drama/real-story genre with a strong female lead voice but doesn't break new ground structurally.
