After a young mother murders her family in her own house, a detective attempts to investigate the mysterious case, only to discover that the house is cursed by a vengeful ghost. Now targeted by the demonic spirits, the detective must do anything to protect herself and her family from harm.
The 2019 Grudge reboot is a largely by-the-numbers supernatural horror entry that fails to distinguish itself from its predecessors or the broader haunted-house genre. The plot recycles familiar curse mechanics with a fractured timeline structure that feels more confusing than clever, and the scares are predictable jump-scare fare. The ensemble cast (Andrea Riseborough, Demián Bichir, John Cho) brings some credibility to underwritten roles, lifting the acting slightly above the material. Cinematography leans on murky, desaturated visuals that are competent but unremarkable. Novelty is severely lacking — this is a reboot of a remake of a Japanese franchise, contributing almost nothing new in concept, tone, or execution. The ending is unsatisfying and predictable, offering little resolution or emotional resonance.
