Errementari is a genuinely distinctive folk horror entry rooted in Basque mythology and the Carlist Wars context, giving it a rare cultural specificity that sets it well apart from generic supernatural fare. The practical demon effects and dark fairy-tale atmosphere are crafted with real personality. However, the plot follows a fairly predictable morality-tale arc once the central conceit is established, and the ending feels abrupt and slightly unearned emotionally. Acting is solid across the board without being remarkable. Cinematography captures the bleak, foggy Basque woodland atmosphere competently but not memorably. Its greatest strength is its novelty — the Basque folkloric source material (Patxi Errementari legend) filtered through a grim 19th-century setting is genuinely one-of-a-kind in contemporary horror.
