Avicii: True Stories (2017)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

Documentary about the arena-packing Swedish DJ, chronicling his explosive rise to fame and surprising decision to retire from live performances in 2016.

The Quartile Take

A straightforward music documentary following Avicii's rise and burnout, competently assembled but not particularly distinctive in approach. The subject matter is compelling given his trajectory and eventual retirement (and later tragic death), lending emotional weight to the narrative. Cinematography is functional with concert footage and candid moments but nothing visually inventive. The talking-head and fly-on-the-wall format is standard for the genre, keeping Novelty low. Acting is not applicable in a meaningful way for a documentary, scored low accordingly. The ending carries poignancy in retrospect but doesn't subvert documentary conventions.
