Creed II (2018)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

Between personal obligations and training for his next big fight against an opponent with ties to his family's past, Adonis Creed is up against the challenge of his life.

The Quartile Take

Creed II is a competent and emotionally satisfying sequel that leans heavily into the Rocky IV legacy, bringing back Ivan Drago and his son Viktor as antagonists. The plot is predictable and formulaic — a rematch arc with family trauma layered on top — but it hits its emotional beats effectively. Acting is solid across the board, with Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone delivering committed performances, though nothing transcends the material. Cinematography is serviceable with some well-staged fight sequences, but it doesn't reach the kinetic visual inventiveness of the first Creed. Novelty is low because the film is explicitly built on recycled Rocky mythology and follows a very familiar sports-drama template without offering a distinctive voice of its own. The ending is crowd-pleasing and emotionally resolving but entirely expected, landing the film safely rather than memorably.
