Demi Lovato: Simply Complicated (2017)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

A personal and intimate look into Demi Lovato's life as not only a regular 25 year old, but also one of the biggest pop stars in the world.

The Quartile Take

Simply Complicated is a competently made celebrity documentary that follows well-worn genre conventions — candid confessionals, behind-the-scenes footage, emotional revelations about addiction and mental health. Lovato is genuine and emotionally open, which elevates the personal intimacy of the piece, but the format itself is familiar territory for music documentaries. The cinematography is polished and professionally executed without being visually distinctive. The narrative arc follows the standard redemption/vulnerability template, and while Lovato's specific story is compelling, the documentary doesn't find a particularly unique cinematic voice to tell it. The ending offers some emotional resolution but stops short of anything truly surprising or resonant on a structural level.
