Wild Rose (2019)

Quartile rating: 7.5/10 · 1 rating

A young Scottish singer, Rose-Lynn Harlan, dreams of making it as a country artist in Nashville after being released from prison.

The Quartile Take

Wild Rose is elevated primarily by Jessie Buckley's magnetic, powerhouse performance as Rose-Lynn — raw, charismatic, and deeply committed. The plot follows a fairly familiar 'dreamer vs. responsibility' arc without many surprises, and the ending, while emotionally satisfying, is somewhat conventional. Cinematography is competent and captures Glasgow and Nashville adequately but doesn't distinguish itself. Novelty is moderate — the Glasgow-country-music collision is a fresh cultural juxtaposition, but the story beats themselves are well-worn. Buckley is the undeniable reason to watch.
