Eli (2019)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

A boy named Eli with a rare autoimmune disorder is confined to a special experimental clinic for his treatment. He soon begins experiencing supernatural forces, turning the supposedly safe facility into a haunted prison for him and his fellow patients.

The Quartile Take

Eli is a serviceable haunted house horror that follows fairly familiar genre beats for most of its runtime — a sick child in an isolated facility experiencing escalating supernatural terror — keeping Novelty and Plot comfortably average. The acting is competent across the board with no standout performances dragging it down. Cinematography is workmanlike horror fare with decent atmosphere but nothing distinctive. Where Eli genuinely earns credit is its ending, which delivers a genuinely surprising and bold tonal shift that recontextualizes everything and elevates the film above its formulaic setup, making it a memorable payoff even if the journey there is conventional.
