Set in Middle America, a group of teens receive an online invitation for sex, though they soon encounter Christian fundamentalists with a much more sinister agenda.

The Quartile Take

Kevin Smith's sharp genre pivot is genuinely surprising — Red State mashes exploitation horror, siege thriller, and biting religious satire into something wholly its own. Michael Parks delivers a mesmerizing, career-defining performance as Pastor Abin Cooper, elevating the material considerably, and the supporting cast (Melissa Leo, John Goodman) is strong throughout. The film's novelty lies in its willingness to subvert genre expectations repeatedly, shifting tonal gears aggressively. However, the plot loses coherence in its third act, and the ending — featuring a long expository monologue that deflates the tension — is widely considered the film's weakest element, feeling unearned and tonally mismatched. Cinematography is functional but unremarkable, largely handheld and utilitarian.
