The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008)

Quartile rating: 8/10 · 1 rating

Born under unusual circumstances, Benjamin Button springs into being as an elderly man in a New Orleans nursing home and ages in reverse. Twelve years after his birth, he meets Daisy, a child who flits in and out of his life as she grows up to be a dancer. Though he has all sorts of unusual adventures over the course of his life, it is his relationship with Daisy, and the hope that they will come together at the right time, that drives Benjamin forward.

The Quartile Take

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is a visually sumptuous and beautifully acted film, with Brad Pitt delivering a nuanced performance across decades and Cate Blanchett bringing warmth to Daisy. Fincher's direction and Claudio Miranda's cinematography create a dreamy, elegiac visual palette that is genuinely exceptional. However, the plot — despite its fantastical premise — often feels episodic and emotionally distanced, more a series of vignettes than a cohesive dramatic arc. The novelty of the reverse-aging concept is undercut by a narrative structure that borrows heavily from Forrest Gump (same screenwriter), making it feel somewhat familiar in execution. The ending is poignant but somewhat deflating rather than fully earned, relying on sentiment over dramatic resolution.
