The Quartile Take

Parasite is a near-masterpiece of genre-blending social satire. The plot is meticulously constructed, escalating from dark comedy to thriller with almost mechanical precision — a genuine 4. The ensemble acting, led by Song Kang-ho, is uniformly exceptional, earning another 4. Bong Joon-ho and Hong Kyung-pyo's cinematography — especially the recurring motif of staircases and the geometry of wealth vs. poverty — is visually stunning and thematically loaded, a 4. Novelty is very high: the film is utterly singular in tone, conception, and execution, blending genres in ways no other film quite manages, earning a 4. The ending, however, is the one area that slightly strains credulity — the basement revelation and the chaotic finale are viscerally effective but the final letter-and-dream coda feels somewhat over-explained and sentimental compared to the cold precision of the rest of the film, landing it at a 3. Still, this is one of the defining films of its decade.
