A washed-up musician teams up with a teacher and a kids show personality to protect young children from a sudden outbreak of zombies.
Little Monsters is a charming zom-com that leans heavily on Lupita Nyong'o's warm, charismatic performance as the ukulele-playing teacher — easily the film's standout quality. The premise of protecting kindergarteners during a zombie outbreak is a fun spin on genre conventions, giving it some novelty through its tonal balance of sweetness and horror-comedy. The plot itself is fairly conventional once the outbreak begins, hitting familiar zombie-movie beats without much structural surprise. Cinematography is functional but unremarkable. The ending wraps things up satisfactorily but predictably, leaving little lasting impression.
