I Am Mother (2019)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

A teenage girl is raised underground by a robot "Mother", designed to repopulate the earth following an extinction event. But their unique bond is threatened when an inexplicable stranger arrives with alarming news.

The Quartile Take

I Am Mother is a tightly constructed sci-fi thriller elevated significantly by strong performances, particularly from Clara Rugaard and Hilary Swank. The premise — a girl raised by an AI in a bunker — is intriguing and the first two acts build genuine tension. However, the ending reveals a twist that feels undercooked and relies on logical leaps that don't fully hold up under scrutiny, undercutting the careful setup. Cinematography is competent and makes good use of the bunker setting without being especially distinctive. The novelty is moderate — it draws on familiar AI-distrust and post-apocalyptic tropes, though it executes them with enough sincerity to feel reasonably fresh.
