Two youngsters from rival New York City gangs fall in love, but tensions between their respective friends build toward tragedy.
Spielberg's 2021 adaptation boasts stunning cinematography and committed performances, particularly from Ariana DeBose who delivers a revelatory turn. The visual craft is exceptional, with rich color palettes and fluid choreography that elevates the Robbins originals. However, as a remake of the 1961 film (itself based on the Broadway musical), novelty is inherently limited — the bones are the same Romeo & Juliet framework well-known to audiences. The ending remains faithfully tragic but carries less emotional gut-punch than in the original due to familiarity. Acting and cinematography are genuine standouts; the plot, while classic, offers nothing new structurally.
