Free Solo (2018)

Quartile rating: 9/10 · 1 rating

Follow Alex Honnold as he attempts to become the first person to ever free solo climb Yosemite's 3,000 foot high El Capitan wall. With no ropes or safety gear, this would arguably be the greatest feat in rock climbing history.

The Quartile Take

Free Solo is a singular documentary achievement. The cinematography is extraordinary — capturing the vertiginous scale of El Capitan with breathtaking precision and nerve-shredding tension. The film's Novelty is genuinely high: while climbing documentaries exist, nothing quite matches the existential stakes, the psychological depth of Alex Honnold's portrayal, and the sheer audacity of the subject matter. The Ending — the actual free solo ascent — is one of the most tension-filled climaxes in documentary history, earning a well-above-average score. Plot and Acting are rated modestly: the narrative structure is solid but conventional for a documentary (preparation, setbacks, attempt), and the 'acting' — really the naturalistic behavior of real people — is compelling but uneven, with Honnold's fascinating detachment contrasting with less developed supporting figures.
