The Quartile Take

Hatching is a visually distinctive Finnish body-horror fable with a strikingly original creature design and a sharply observed metaphor for toxic perfectionism and maternal pressure. The cinematography is immaculate — pristine, pastel-saturated interiors that make the grotesque intrusions all the more unsettling. The film's central conceit is genuinely novel, blending Cronenbergian body horror with a fairy-tale register in a way that feels singular. The plot is coherent and thematically rich but loses momentum as the metaphor grows increasingly literal, and the ending feels rushed and undercooked, failing to deliver the catharsis the setup promises. The acting is solid, particularly from Siiri Solalinna as Tinja, though the ensemble is functional rather than exceptional.
