Look Away (2018)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

A timid and socially alienated 17-year-old high school student's life is turned upside down when she switches places with her sinister mirror image.

The Quartile Take

Look Away follows a well-worn psychological thriller template — the shy outsider swapping with a dark alter ego — that recalls Black Swan, The Double, and countless evil-twin narratives without meaningfully distinguishing itself. The plot is competent and reasonably engaging but predictable, hitting expected beats of social humiliation, revenge fantasy, and identity dissolution. Acting is serviceable; India Eisley carries the dual-role lead with some nuance, but supporting performances are thin and archetypal. Cinematography is polished and occasionally stylish with effective mirror-play imagery, but nothing that transcends the genre. Novelty is low — the concept is derivative and the execution doesn't subvert or elevate the familiar premise enough to feel singular. The ending, leaning into ambiguous dark triumph, feels rushed and undercooked, failing to deliver the emotional or thematic payoff the setup promised.
