A detective becomes entangled in a mystery involving his missing daughter and a secret government program while investigating a string of reality-bending crimes.
Hypnotic (2023) blends mind-bending thriller tropes with a missing-child emotional hook, but the execution is muddled. The plot starts intriguingly with reality-distorting heists and a detective's grief, but increasingly collapses under convoluted twists that strain credibility rather than reward close attention. Ben Affleck delivers a serviceable but unremarkable lead performance, while Alice Braga adds some spark as a mysterious figure; the ensemble is competent but not memorable. Cinematography is polished and functional — Robert Rodriguez brings slick visuals and some stylish setpieces — but nothing truly distinctive. Novelty suffers because the premise, though promising, recycles familiar elements from films like Inception and Minority Report without a singular voice or fresh execution. The ending, built around a cascade of reveals, feels overloaded and unsatisfying, sacrificing emotional resonance for mechanical plot mechanics.
