Quartile rating: 8/10 · 1 rating
A fatalistic car crash in Mexico city sets off a chain of events in the lives of three people: a supermodel, a young man wanting to run off with his sister-in-law, and a homeless man.
Amores Perros is a landmark of Mexican cinema and a stunning debut from Iñárritu. Its three interlocking stories are crafted with raw energy and emotional brutality, and the performances — especially Gael García Bernal and Emilio Echevarría — are riveting. The handheld, visceral cinematography by Rodrigo Prieto is distinctive and urgent, perfectly matching the chaos of Mexico City life. The triptych structure was genuinely innovative and influential, and the film's voice is utterly singular. The ending of each segment is satisfying but somewhat uneven — the third story's resolution feels slightly more muted than the explosive setup warrants — preventing a full 4 there.
