Mouse desperately wants to join The Midnight Clique, the infamous Baltimore dirt bike riders who rule the summertime streets. When Midnight’s leader, Blax, takes 14-year-old Mouse under his wing, Mouse soon finds himself torn between the straight-and-narrow and a road filled with fast money and violence.
Charm City Kings captures authentic Baltimore street culture and the dirt bike subculture with genuine energy and heart. The performances, particularly William Catlett as Blax, are grounded and believable. The cinematography has a vivid, kinetic quality during the riding sequences. However, the coming-of-age narrative follows a fairly familiar template of a young man torn between two worlds, and the ending feels somewhat abrupt and emotionally unresolved, undercutting the film's otherwise strong momentum.
