Detainment (2018)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

Two ten year-old boys are detained by police under suspicion of abducting and murdering a toddler.

The Quartile Take

Detainment is a harrowing short film recreating the police interviews of Jon Venables and Robert Thompson following the murder of James Bulger, drawn entirely from transcripts. Its plot is grippingly structured around the interrogation scenes, and the child performances are extraordinary — raw, unsettling, and deeply convincing. Cinematography is functional and restrained, serving the claustrophobic setting without being especially distinctive. Novelty is moderate: the verbatim-transcript docudrama format has precedent, and the Bulger case has been covered extensively, though the focus on the boys' own words gives it a particular angle. The ending, faithful to history, lands with quiet devastation but lacks a dramatically constructed resolution beyond the factual outcome.
