Faced with sudden doubts about her marriage, a young New York mother teams up with her larger-than-life playboy father to tail her husband.

The Quartile Take

On the Rocks is a breezy, lightweight Sofia Coppola character piece elevated almost entirely by Bill Murray's effortlessly charming performance alongside Rashida Jones. The plot is thin and predictable — the marital suspicion premise goes exactly where you'd expect with little tension or surprise. Murray and Jones have genuine chemistry and warmth, with Murray delivering one of his most enjoyable late-career turns, hence the high Acting mark. Coppola's New York is elegant and sun-dappled but unremarkable compared to her more visually distinctive work. The film doesn't break new ground — it retreads familiar Coppola themes of alienation and father-daughter dynamics without the haunting depth of Lost in Translation. The ending resolves things pleasantly but without much emotional payoff or resonance, feeling a bit too neat and inconsequential.
