The Quartile Take

Area 51 is a found-footage horror film from Oren Peli (of Paranormal Activity fame) that spent years on the shelf before release, and it shows. The plot is thin and predictable — three generic protagonists sneak into a government facility and encounter aliens — offering little tension or character development. The acting is serviceable but unremarkable, with no standout performances. Cinematography follows standard found-footage conventions without any particularly inventive sequences or memorable shots. Novelty is low; by 2015 the found-footage genre was thoroughly exhausted, and transplanting it to Area 51 lore adds little freshness — it feels like a retread of better films in the subgenre. The ending, while attempting a scary payoff with alien encounters, fails to deliver genuine dread or satisfying resolution, leaving viewers underwhelmed. A forgettable entry in both the found-footage and alien horror genres.
