In 1984, a Russian research team goes below the surface to find out what secret the world's deepest borehole is hiding. On their expedition, something unexpectedly gruesome awaits the researchers.
Superdeep draws on the Kola Superdeep Borehole as a genuinely intriguing real-world setting, giving it a modest novelty boost over generic creature-horror fare. The fungal body-horror visuals and claustrophobic underground atmosphere are competently rendered cinematographically, recalling The Thing and Annihilation without quite matching them. However, the plot is thin and derivative — a standard 'team gets infected one by one' structure with little narrative sophistication — and the acting is functional at best, with characterization too shallow to generate real tension. The ending resolves weakly, failing to capitalize on the dread built in the middle act, leaving the film feeling incomplete and undercooked despite its atmospheric promise.
