Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2016)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

A zombie outbreak has fallen upon the land in this reimagining of Jane Austen's classic tale of the tangled relationships between lovers from different social classes in 19th century England. Feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet is a master of martial arts and weaponry and the handsome Mr. Darcy is a fierce zombie killer, yet the epitome of upper class prejudice. As the zombie outbreak intensifies, they must swallow their pride and join forces on the blood-soaked battlefield in order to conquer the undead once and for all.

The Quartile Take

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies earns its highest marks for Novelty — the mashup of Jane Austen's Regency romance with zombie horror is a genuinely singular concept that commits fully to its absurd premise, blending corset-and-candelabra aesthetics with martial arts and gore. The plot faithfully mirrors Austen's narrative structure while layering in the undead threat, which works reasonably well but struggles to balance both genres satisfyingly — neither the romance nor the horror reaches its full potential. Acting is competent across the board, with Lily James and Sam Riley doing credible work, though the material rarely challenges anyone. Cinematography is serviceable period fare with some stylish action sequences but nothing visually groundbreaking. The ending feels rushed and tonally uncertain, resolving the romantic arc without much earned weight and deflating tension built up in the third act.
