The last years of Bettino Craxi, one of the most important and controversial italian leader of the 1980's.
Hammamet is an Italian biographical drama focusing on the twilight years of Bettino Craxi, exiled in Tunisia. Pierfrancesco Favino delivers a transformative, physically committed performance that stands as the film's defining achievement, earning wide critical acclaim. The cinematography is competent but unremarkable, favoring intimate interiors and sun-bleached exteriors without particular visual distinction. The plot, while adequately structured, meanders at times and relies heavily on the biopic formula of retrospective guilt and political introspection, limiting its novelty. As a portrait of a fallen political figure it covers familiar ground in terms of genre conventions. The ending is somber and fitting but not especially memorable beyond its subject matter.
