19 year old Linnéa leaves her small town in Sweden and heads for Los Angeles with the aim of becoming the world's next big porn star, but the road to her goal turns out to be bumpier than she imagined.
Pleasure is a genuinely distinctive debut from Ninja Thyberg, offering an unflinching, almost ethnographic look at the American porn industry through the eyes of a Swedish newcomer. Sofia Kappel's non-professional lead performance is remarkable — raw, calculating, and deeply human simultaneously. The film's novelty is high because it occupies a rare space: neither exploitative nor preachy, it treats its subject with clinical curiosity and moral ambiguity that few films dare. The plot is compelling but somewhat episodic, functioning more as a series of industry encounters than a tightly constructed narrative arc. Cinematography is competent and purposeful — the explicit content is handled with a documentarian directness — but doesn't particularly distinguish itself visually beyond its subject matter. The ending is thoughtful but deliberately unresolved in a way that may frustrate viewers expecting cleaner catharsis, though it remains tonally consistent with the film's refusal to moralize.
