Causeway (2022)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

A US soldier suffers a traumatic brain injury while fighting in Afghanistan and struggles to adjust to life back home in New Orleans. When she meets local mechanic James, the pair begin to forge an unexpected bond.

The Quartile Take

Causeway is carried almost entirely by its two lead performances — Jennifer Lawrence and Brian Tyree Henry deliver quietly devastating, nuanced work that elevates what is otherwise a modest, familiar recovery drama. The plot follows well-worn PTSD and emotional reconnection territory without significant structural invention, and the New Orleans setting, while atmospherically used, doesn't push the cinematography into genuinely distinctive territory. The bond between the two leads feels earned and authentic, but the film's narrative arc is largely predictable. The ending lands with understated emotional resonance, consistent with the film's restrained tone, but doesn't linger with particular force. Henry's Oscar nomination was well deserved — the acting is the clear standout in an otherwise competent but unremarkable package.
