Ghosts of War (2020)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

A group of World War II American soldiers encounter a supernatural enemy as they occupy a French castle previously under Nazi control.

The Quartile Take

Ghosts of War starts with a genuinely compelling genre mashup — WWII soldiers vs. supernatural forces in a haunted French castle — and maintains decent tension through its first two acts. However, the third-act twist into science-fiction/video game territory divides audiences sharply, feeling jarring and undercooked rather than revelatory, which drags down the ending significantly. Acting is serviceable but unremarkable across the board, with no standout performances. Cinematography captures the gothic castle atmosphere competently without being visually distinguished. The premise is its strongest asset, blending war horror in a way that feels fresh enough to stand apart from generic entries in either genre, though it ultimately doesn't fully capitalize on its interesting setup.
