The Marvels (2023)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe.

The Quartile Take

The Marvels is a breezy but narratively thin MCU entry. The power-swapping gimmick is fun in concept but underutilized dramatically, and the villain (Dar-Benn) is underdeveloped, leaving the plot feeling rushed and consequence-free. The three leads share decent chemistry and Iman Vellani in particular brings infectious energy, lifting the acting above average. Cinematography is competent MCU fare with some visually inventive sequences (the musical planet stands out) but nothing groundbreaking. Novelty is low — it's a sequel built on prior MCU scaffolding with a fairly recycled save-the-universe stakes framework, despite the charming power-swap mechanic. The ending is abrupt and unsatisfying, resolving the central conflict quickly and leaning heavily on sequel setup rather than earned closure.
