The Jack in the Box (2019)

Quartile rating: 5.5/10 · 1 rating

When a vintage Jack-in-the-box is un-earthed and opened, it's new owners soon have reason to believe the creepy clown doll within has a life of its own.

The Quartile Take

The Jack in the Box is a modestly competent British horror entry that leans on familiar killer-toy tropes without adding much new. The plot is predictable and underdeveloped, following a well-worn template of cursed object unleashing evil. Acting is serviceable but unremarkable across the board. Cinematography has some effective atmospheric moments and decent use of shadow and lighting to build tension, slightly above average for its budget tier. Novelty is low — the killer clown-in-a-box concept is derivative of numerous evil-doll and clown horror entries. The ending fails to deliver a satisfying payoff, wrapping up loosely without meaningful resolution.
