Successful author Veronica finds herself trapped in a horrifying reality and must uncover the mind-bending mystery before it's too late.
Antebellum is visually striking with long, fluid takes and lush, atmospheric cinematography that genuinely impresses, particularly in its opening sequence. However, the film's central twist — which the entire narrative hinges on — is both telegraphed and undercooked, undermining the horror premise. The acting is competent, with Janelle Monáe delivering a committed performance that elevates thin material. The film's concept of blending modern racial terror with antebellum slavery imagery has some novelty but leans heavily on shock value over meaningful exploration. The ending, once the twist is revealed, feels logistically implausible and emotionally unsatisfying, collapsing the tension built up by the strong visual craft. A case of impressive form overwhelmed by a weak, manipulative screenplay.
